30 Day Movie Challenge: Day 6- Dark Crimes (2016)

Alright, we are six days into the real 30 Day Film Challenge and things are already cooking. So for yesterdays film, we had to watch a high rated film from Rotten Tomatoes (Portrait Of A Girl On Fire) and for today we have to do the opposite. What I mean by opposite is that we have to watch the lowest scored film on Rotten Tomatoes and coming in with a straight zero is 2016's Dark Crimes which was directed by Alexandros Avranas (Love Me Not) and is based off the 2008 article True Crimes - A Postmodern Murder Mystery by David Grann. The film stars Jim Carrey (Sonic The Hedgehog) as fallen from grace Polish detective Tadek who is desperate to regain his name that he gets wrapped in a cold case that will literally cost him everything as he dives deeper into the darkness. The film also stars Marton Csokas (Voice From The Stone) as Kozlov, Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac: Vol. I) as Kasia, Kati Outinen (The Man Without A Past) as Mr. Malinowska, Vlad Ivanov (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) as Piotr, Robert Wieckiewicz (The Crown Witness) as Greger, Agata Kulesza (These Daughters Of Mine) as Marta, Piotr Glowacki (Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge) as Victor, and Zbigniew Zamachowski (Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear) as Lukasz.

I was really surprised at first that this film had a zero for a score on Rotten Tomatoes (I'll post the screen shot below), but after watching this film you can definitely understand why although zero is a really low score even for this. The one complaint they make that I think they got right was that for a true crime styled film, they fail to hit the mark completely. The subject matter at hand had so much potential to go in so many directions especially with a talent like Csokas who was brilliant in a film that was otherwise flat. Jim Carrey is not even my biggest complaint about the film because the problem I had was not with the acting, but rather the writing was terrible. They were pulling in so many directions and all of the subplots nearly did nothing for the film as far as advancing the overall plot of the film. His wife left him and he barely gave a sh** about it as it literally had no effect on him whatsoever and the fact is he didn't care about his marriage anyways. The other surprise is that the film has Charlotte Gainsbourg who is brilliant in this film and in general to be perfectly honest. The performance she puts on in this film couldn't even save it, but wait if you decide to watch this what she does in the film. As I said before, there was so much potential in this film as far as the actors, the tone of the film, and the locations to nail a home run, but they struck out. That is why I am going to give the film an C-/D+ (Somewhere in there) for a final grade.
